Wifi Frequent Drop out in Smart Phones and Devices

Phone users often have Wifi dropout problem where Wifi just disconnects by itself on and off.  Sometimes,  the problem will  go away after resetting the phone;  sometimes,  by resetting the router does the trick.  Sometimes,  all these methods just couldn't  work.  This article will share one method that should solve this problem.

What Can Go Wrong?

There are a few possibilities:

1.   Corrupted Operating System;
2.   Hardware problems;
3.   Poor internet reception;
4.   Wifi Interference

This article will look at Wifi interferences as this is the most common cause.

Why Wi-Fi Interference?

Most routers have a factory default channel to transmit Wifi signal.  If  the neighbour is using the same channel,  there would be Wifi interference.  Phone or the TV's reception will be affected especially when one is using the devices in the "blind spots" or other areas where Wifi signal is not  strong.

How Could this be Detected?

One can use Android phones or Android device such as Android TV to detect the interferences.   One can also use iPhone with a different apps like Apple AirPort,  but it will not work as good.

[Wifi Analyzer] can be used to find out if the Wifi bandwidth is already used by others routers and if there is a need to change the channel to prevent Wifi signal interference.

1.  Download Wi-fi Analyzer to an Android phone Download  from here   or direct from Goggle Store.
If one is using an Android Phone,  downloaded the apps directly from Goggle Store.  One can also install it either using external thumbdrive or uploading it to the Goggle Drive or equivalent and download the APK to the phone from the cloud drive
2.  Analyse the Wifi Channel 1.  Fire up the Wifi Analyser,  one would be greeted with the screen  shown on the right.

One could tap the 2.4G or 5G button at the top left hand corner to change the Wifi network. For 2.4 Ghz,  there are 14 channels and for 5 Ghz,  there are 3 bands with channels from 36 to 161

3.  Change Channel
1.  Note down the channel number that is least congested in the 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz band;

2.  Change the channel in the router by entering the defaulted address [192.168.1.1] in an Internet browser  such as Firefox or Goggle chrome on the phone or PC.   The browser will ask for User name and password;

3.  For ASUS routers,  the next screen shown on the right will appear after the successful log-in..   Select [Wireless]

In the next screen,  select the correct Wifi frequency (2.4 Ghz or 5.0 Ghz) and change the control channel number as shown

If the Wifi is congested in a particular channel,  the reception could be easily interrupted by other Wifi routers.

For new router,  the user name is [admin] and the password is usually [0000] or [admin] or none.  Check the router manual for instruction

Keep Router Always  in Tip Top Condition

Like any other computer devices,  router also has a mini processor built-in.  It will need  a small RAM memory to store startup and running data.  This RAM memory can be easily “clogged” and slow down the processing speed,   causing Wifi transmitting problem.  One could reset the RAM memory by  switching off the router for a few seconds and then  turn it on.   To keep the router always in tip top condition,  one could do this automatically on a weekly basis using this method described here.
